KAZAKHSTAN-GOVERNMENT-ENERGY-DEFICIT

Kazakhstan aims to end power deficit by early 2027 - BektenovPrime Minister Olzhas Bektenov stated on Tuesday that Kazakhstan plans to eliminate its electricity deficit by the first quarter of 2027, driven by a major rollout of new generating capacity next year.“This year we will be commissioning 2.6 GW power generation capacity, which will allow us to resolve the energy deficit in the first quarter of next year,” Bektenov said at an extended government meeting on Tuesday. The Prime Minister acknowledged that the nation currently relies on imports to cover peak-hour shortages. While the deficit was reduced by 29% last year, he described it as still “significant.”He credited a recent overhaul of tariff policy for restoring market conditions and providing greater predictability, which has spurred private investment. The strategy attracted 655 billion tenge to the energy sector in 2025, with an estimated 900 billion tenge expected in 2026.Looking ahead, Bektenov projected that national electricity generation will grow by 39 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) by 2029.To secure long-term energy sovereignty, the government is pursuing a strategic plan to bring over 26 GW of new capacity online by 2035. This ambitious portfolio includes investments in nuclear energy and modern clean coal technologies. (ICE ALMATY)
