Construction of 2nd runway at Astana airport to begin in 2026 – prime ministerConstruction of a second runway at Astana International Airport will begin in 2026, increasing the airport’s capacity to 40 million passengers a year, Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov said.“This year we will start the construction of a second runway at the Astana airport. Once it is commissioned, we will be able to carry out a major overhaul of the existing runway, which has not been renovated for more than 20 years. This will quadruple the airport’s capacity to 40 million passengers,” Bektenov said at an extended government meeting on Tuesday.The prime minister also said that the reconstruction of the domestic terminal at the Almaty airport is slated for completion in July 2025, boosting its capacity from 14 million to 19 million passengers. The runway of the Almaty airport will be modernized as well, according to Bektenov.The Astana airport is the country's second-largest international air hub after Almaty and is a key strategic asset, capable of serving all aircraft types without restrictions on takeoff weight.
