INDONESIA TARGETS 10-FOLD INCREASE IN TEXTILE EXPORTS

The Indonesian government aims to boost textile and textile product (TPT) exports tenfold over the next decade, supported by upcoming trade agreements such as IEU‑CEPA, ICA‑CEPA, the I‑EAEU FTA, and the Indonesia–UK partnership. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto said these deals will expand global market access, including zero-percent tariffs for Indonesian goods entering the EU starting in 2027. However, industry groups warn that improving export access alone is not enough to strengthen the sector. Representatives from the Indonesian Synthetic Fiber and Filament Yarn Producers Association (APSyFI) and  Indonesian Textile Association (API) stress that domestic competitiveness must be restored across the supply chain. The industry has faced heavy pressure from cheap imported products—especially POY yarn from China—leading to factory closures and thousands of job losses. Despite Indonesia’s strong position in polyester, viscose, and nylon production, challenges such as high production costs, limited industrial gas supply, high interest rates, and inconsistent regulations continue to weaken industry resilience. Business leaders say achieving the government’s ambitious export target will require structural reforms, stronger safeguards, and aligned policies to revitalize both domestic and export competitiveness.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6095/markets-and-finance/indonesia-targets-10-fold-increase-in-textile-exports-industry-calls-for-structural-reforms (ICE GIACARTA)
