Kuala Lumpur, 13 February 2026 – Tenaga Nasional Bhd emerged as the biggest winner in the government’s first competitive bidding exercise for thermal power plants since 2012, securing approval via a consortium with Aurora Power Generation Sdn Bhd to develop a 1,400MW combined cycle gas plant in Paka, Terengganu. The project, awarded by the Energy Commission, aims to meet rising electricity demand driven mainly by new data centres and to strengthen grid stability, with construction expected to take three years under a 15-year power purchase agreement. Three Tenaga-linked plants, Gelugor (Penang), Putrajaya, and Tuanku Ja’afar (Port Dickson) have also secured power purchase agreement extensions until end-2029. Other successful bidders included Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd, PETRONAS (via Pengerang Power), and Malakoff Corp Bhd, whose subsidiaries obtained extensions for several plants in Perak and Penang. Tenaga’s shares closed at RM13.96 (approximately EUR 2.93), valuing it at RM81.37 billion (approximately EUR 17.09 billion), while Malakoff ended at 78.5 sen with a RM3.93 billion (approximately EUR 825.53 million) market.Source - https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/792965 (ICE KUALA LUMPUR)
