KAZAKHSTAN-PARLIAMENT-CHINA-RENEWABLES

Kazakh parliament ratifies agreement with China on construction of “green” power plants in republic’s three regionsThe Senate, the upper house of Kazakhstan’s parliament, adopted on Thursday a Law on the Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Government of the People’s Republic of China on Renewable Energy Projects. The law was earlier passed by the Majilis, the lower house of parliament, and will now be sent to the president for signature.Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said earlier that the agreement provides for the implementation of major investment projects with a total capacity of 1.8 gigawatts, including the construction of three wind power plants with a combined capacity of 1.5 gigawatts and one solar power plant with a capacity of 0.3 gigawatts. The projects will be carried out in the Karaganda, Turkestan and Pavlodar regions. The choice of these regions is due to their high wind and solar potential, as well as the technical ability to integrate new capacity into the country’s power grid. The projects are scheduled for completion in 2027–2029.Total investment is estimated at $2.2 billion, with financing involving international financial institutions and banks. From the Kazakh side, Samruk-Energy will act as a co-investor.The projects are expected to create more than 100 permanent jobs and about 1,500 temporary jobs, and to ensure additional annual generation of more than 5.7 billion kilowatt-hours of “green” electricity.
