SYRIA, FAO SIGN AGREEMENT TO SUPPORT LIVESTOCK SECTOR

Syria’s Veterinary Syndicate and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at supporting livestock breeders and improving production in several provinces.  The agreement, signed in Damascus on Wednesday, provides for the distribution of 3,300 tons of feed to sheep, goat and cattle breeders in Hama, Homs, Daraa, Quneitra and Sweida, according to officials. It also includes the delivery of 3,000 liters of external parasite treatment to help improve herd health.  The deal was signed by Syndicate Head Dr. Hussein Al-Balan and FAO Acting Country Representative Pirro-Tomaso Perri.  Al-Balan said the initiative is designed to help livestock breeders facing economic pressures and to strengthen cooperation between Syrian veterinary authorities and FAO. He added that veterinarians would also play a role in providing guidance on animal nutrition and health care.  The agreement forms part of broader FAO-backed efforts to rehabilitate Syria’s agricultural sector after years of war and economic strain.
