SYRIA REPLACES 35% OF OLD CURRENCY IN ONGOING EXCHANGE PROCESS
The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria Abdulkader Husrieh said around 35 percent of the old cash in circulation has been replaced since the launch of the currency exchange process earlier this year. Husrieh told SANA on Monday that the exchange covered 35 percent of the estimated 42 trillion Syrian pounds in old banknotes, describing the progress as a clear indicator of the sound implementation of the process. He said the central bank would continue at the same pace to ensure the exchange is completed smoothly and efficiently, stressing that the operation serves the national economic interest. Husrieh also praised public cooperation and the efforts of financial institutions and central bank staff involved in the process, noting that work will continue until the exchange is fully completed. The currency exchange process began in early January under a government-approved framework and is being carried out nationwide. (ICE BEIRUT)
