US TO LOWER TARIFF FOR BANGLADESH FROM 20% TO 19%
The USA has granted duty-free access to 2,500 Bangladeshi products, while Bangladesh has allowed 4,400 American products similar access. Garments made from American cotton can be exported to the USA at zero duty. Other Bangladeshi products, such as pharmaceuticals, fisheries, and food items, will also benefit from duty-free access. The agreement was signed by Bangladesh's Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin and the US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer after nine months of negotiations. Greer praised Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus and the negotiating team for their efforts. The US will reduce reciprocal tariffs to 19%, down from an original 37%, and establish a mechanism for certain textile goods from Bangladesh to receive zero tariffs. This agreement enhances bilateral economic relations and will come into effect once notifications are issued. Present at the signing were Bangladesh's commerce secretary and US Assistant Trade Representative Brendan Lynch. (ICE NEW DELHI)
