SYRIA ENTERS “ACCELERATED RECOVERY PHASE”, IMF MISSION REPORTS
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Wednesday that Syria has begun a period of rapid economic recovery, citing a fiscal surplus, falling inflation and renewed integration into the global economy. In a statement released on Wednesday following a mission visit to Damascus, headed by Ron van Rooden, the IMF said the government ended 2025 with a slight budget surplus after curbing spending and halting monetary financing through the central bank. The Fund said inflation dropped to low double digits by the end of 2025 as the Syrian pound strengthened. The IMF plans to support the Central Bank of Syria in building a modern monetary policy framework and restructuring the banking sector. It also agreed to assist the Finance Ministry’s 2026–2030 strategic transformation plan. The mission praised Syrian officials for what it called transparent and constructive talks, adding that sustained recovery will depend on continued international backing and access to external financing.
