EXPANSION AND INVESTMENT IN ENERGY INDEPENDENCE DRIVE UKRAINIAN RETAIL GROWTH

According to the Retail Association of Ukraine (RAU), over the four years of full-scale war Ukrainian retail has shifted from a survival and recovery approach to systematic growth. The main investments that have been made are focused on energy independence, digitalization, and new retail formats. As one example, last year the Silpo chain added rooftop solar power systems to 10 more of its supermarkets, bringing the total to 13, whereas initially, only three had such installations. The company is also progressively adopting more environmentally friendly and efficient refrigeration equipment.Despite the ever-present war risks, Ukrainian retail has shown a strong capacity to adapt. Most retail chains have either resumed operations after suffering damage that resulted in temporary closures or moved to safer regions. RAU members’ revenue for the first half of 2025 reached ₴936.6B, a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Tax payments for 2024 exceeded ₴144B.Despite the ongoing conflict, the total number of stores has surpassed pre-war levels, growing from 17,396 to 24,549 outlets across major retail sectors. Last year, there was a net increase of 1,551 stores. The highest concentration of outlets is in the Kyiv region (5,911), Lviv region (2,228), and Odesa region (1,433).https://ubn.news/investment-in-energy-independence-and-expansion-how-has-ukrainian-retail-evolved-during-the-years-of-the-war/ (ICE KIEV)
