INDONESIA TARGETS OIL SOURCES OUTSIDE THE MIDDLE EAST

Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the government has secured cooperation agreements to obtain oil supplies from outside the Middle East in response to rising global oil prices. The price surge followed the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to escalating military conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has severely disrupted global energy distribution. Airlangga emphasized that both the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea—two critical trade routes—are experiencing significant disturbances, and the government is closely monitoring how long the conflict will continue to assess its broader economic impact on Indonesia. As a precaution, Indonesia is pursuing alternative import sources to strengthen supply security. Pertamina has already signed several Memoranda of Understanding with American energy companies, including Chevron and Exxon, to ensure access to non‑Middle Eastern oil supplies. The government continues to assess availability from various regions to mitigate risks arising from the geopolitical situation. The urgency of diversification increased after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz on 28 February 2026 following a joint U.S.–Israel military operation, temporarily blocking one of the world’s most important oil transit routes.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2231332/indonesia-targets-oil-sources-outside-the-middle-east  (ICE GIACARTA)
