INDONESIA ASKS WTO TO SUSPEND EU CONCESSIONS OVER PALM OIL

Indonesia has formally requested that the World Trade Organization’s Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) suspend concessions and obligations to the European Union (EU) after the EU failed to comply with WTO rulings regarding palm oil (case DS593). Trade Minister of Indonesia, Budi Santoso, explained that the suspension would primarily target goods but could extend to other sectors, emphasizing that the move is consistent with WTO rules under Article 22.2. He noted that the EU had missed deadlines to adjust its policies and had not provided fair compensation to Indonesia, prompting the government to safeguard its trade rights through this measure. Santoso highlighted that the decision was coordinated across government agencies and supported by industry groups such as the Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (GAPKI) and the Indonesian Biofuel Producers Association (APROBI). He stressed that Indonesian businesses have suffered significant annual losses due to reduced export opportunities, making the suspension of concessions a necessary step to protect national economic interests while still maintaining bilateral relations with the EU.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/407367/indonesia-asks-wto-to-suspend-eu-concessions-over-palm-oil (ICE GIACARTA)
