INDONESIA TIGHTENS OVERSIGHT OF IMPORTED FISH PRODUCTS

Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is tightening supervision of foreign companies exporting fresh fish products to Indonesia, following the implementation of Government Regulation No. 1/2026 on Food Safety. According to Ishartini, Head of the Marine and Fishery Product Quality Control and Supervision Agency, foreign companies must now undergo a strict registration process to ensure compliance with sanitation, hygiene, and food safety standards. Oversight includes quality surveys, laboratory testing, and pre‑border inspections conducted by certified quality inspectors. Only companies that obtain an official registration number from the ministry are authorized to supply fishery products to the Indonesian market. Indonesia also recognizes exporters from countries with Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRA), currently including Vietnam, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Canada, Russia, and China. For countries without an MRA, fishery products must undergo laboratory testing in Indonesia before distribution. Despite tightening controls on imports, Indonesia remains one of the world’s largest net exporters of fishery products. From January to September 2025, the country exported more than 1 million tons of fishery products valued at over USD 4 billion, while imports reached approximately 309,000 tons worth USD 463.55 million. The strengthened oversight aims to protect Indonesian consumers while ensuring that imported products meet the same rigorous standards applied to domestic production.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/407611/indonesia-tightens-oversight-of-imported-fish-products (ICE GIACARTA)
