Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan discuss creating working group on nuclear energy cooperationKazakhstan and Uzbekistan are discussing expanding cooperation in nuclear energy, including the possible creation of a joint working group to coordinate projects in the sector.Prospects for cooperation were discussed by Almasadam Satkaliyev, chairman of Kazakhstan's Atomic Energy Agency, and Azim Akhmedkhojayev, director of the Agency for Atomic Energy under Uzbekistan's Cabinet of Ministers (Uzatom), on the sidelines of the second International Nuclear Energy Summit in Paris, Uzatom's press service reported.The sides reviewed the current state and prospects for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, ensuring nuclear and radiation safety, as well as the exchange of experience and personnel training.They also discussed the possibility of establishing a joint working group to coordinate and support the implementation of nuclear power plant construction projects in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.Following the meeting, the parties agreed to organize a visit to Uzbekistan by a Kazakh delegation led by Satkaliyev.Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom earlier signed a roadmap with Kazakhstan for the construction of two VVER-1200 nuclear power units. Construction of the plant is expected to take about 11 years and could be completed in 2035–2036.In Uzbekistan, Rosatom will also be involved in the construction of two large-capacity nuclear power units based on Generation III+ VVER-1000 reactors and two units with small RITM-200N reactors, each with a capacity of 55 megawatts. In October 2025, excavation work started in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan on the site of the future nuclear power plant. (ICE ALMATY)
