INDIA NEEDS US$ 2.2 TRILLION POWER SECTOR INVESTMENT OVER 20 YEARS: POWER SECRETARY PANKAJ AGRAWAL
India is likely to need an investment of around US$ 2.2 trillion (Rs. 203.32 lakh crores) in the power sector in the next two decades to support the growing power demand and enable the energy transition in the country, as announced by the Power Secretary, Mr. Pankaj Agrawal. The investment need reflects the scale of transformation required in the power generation, transmission, distribution, and energy storage infrastructure to support the growing needs of the country’s ever-expanding economy. The announcement was made in the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026, where the focus was on a financially viable and strong power sector that could support the country’s sustained economic growth.A major portion of this will be spent on the expansion of renewable energy resources, modernisation of the grid, and the strengthening of the grid to accommodate the influx of renewable resources. This is due to the increase in the demand for electricity, the move towards digitisation, urbanisation, and the increase in the rate of industrialisation. The government is also emphasising reforms in market design, institutional frameworks, and financing mechanisms to ensure long-term sustainability of the sector. These efforts are critical to improving efficiency, enhancing reliability, and supporting India’s broader climate and energy security goals.Disclaimer: This information has been collected through secondary research and IBEF is not responsible for any errors in the same.https://www.ibef.org/news/india-needs-us-2-2-trillion-power-sector-investment-over-20-years-power-secretary-pankaj-agrawal (ICE MUMBAI)
