INDONESIA OPENS DOOR TO HIGHER COAL, NICKEL OUTPUT

Indonesia is considering a measured relaxation of coal and nickel production quotas as long as global prices remain strong, marking a potential shift from its earlier plan to curb output. Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the government is monitoring market conditions closely and emphasized that any adjustment would be “carefully calibrated” to maintain balance between supply and demand. The previous plan set coal output at 600 million tons, well below last year’s 790 million tons, while nickel ore quotas remain at 260–270 million tons, still short of the estimated 340–350 million tons needed by domestic smelters. Industry groups such as the Indonesian Nickel Miners Association (APNI) and the Indonesian Nickel Industry Forum (FINI) have welcomed the possible easing, arguing it would help secure feedstock for Indonesia’s expanding downstream sector, particularly nickel processing for electric vehicle batteries. However, the government has not yet issued official revisions, and all changes must be made through updates to companies’ annual RKAB plans. The debate reflects Indonesia’s growing influence in global energy and mineral supply chains—and the challenge of preventing oversupply without constraining its own rapidly growing processing industries.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-opens-door-to-higher-coal-nickel-output (ICE GIACARTA)
