KENYA, MOZAMBIQUE SIGN DEALS TO BOLSTER BILATERAL RELATIONS

Kenya and Mozambique have signed three MoUs aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, following talks between President William Ruto and Mozambique’s Daniel Francisco Chapo at State House, Nairobi. The agreements, signed yesterday, cover diplomatic training and research, prison and correctional services, and youth and sports cooperation. They are expected to lay the groundwork for expanded collaboration between the two countries. One MoU focuses on cooperation in foreign policy, research, and the exchange of publications, as well as capacity building for officials, while another targets collaboration in penitentiary and correctional services, including the exchange of standards and training opportunities.A second agreement targets collaboration in penitentiary and correctional services, including the exchange of standards and training opportunities. The third focuses on youth and sports, particularly athletics, and includes provisions for scholarships and joint training. President Ruto described the agreements as a turning point in the relationship between Nairobi and Maputo. “These agreements mark an important milestone in our bilateral relations and provide a strong framework for deepening cooperation,” he said, adding that both governments were committed to ensuring the agreements are implemented in a timely manner so that citizens could benefit.The duo also agreed to set up a Permanent Joint Commission to accelerate cooperation in additional areas, including trade, security and regional stability. Dr Ruto said that discussions had extended beyond the signed agreements and that both sides had identified sectors with growth potential, including pharmaceuticals, tea, edible oils, cosmetics, agro-processing, industrial products and energy. President Chapo pointed to Kenya’s success in athletics as a key area of interest, indicating that Mozambique would seek to tap into Kenya’s training systems.“Kenyan athletes are disciplined. That is the secret of their success, and it is something we want to learn,” he said. President Chapo announced plans to resume direct flights between the two countries, emphasising the importance of air connectivity in facilitating trade and cultural exchange. During his visit, which began earlier this week, he attended the Kenya International Investment Conference as the guest of honour.He hailed it as one of the best investment forums that Mozambique should replicate. “We attended the event and are grateful for the opportunity to network. We intend to hold similar events,” he said. Mozambique’s president, at the same time, praised the development of Konza Technopolis, describing it as a flagship project that highlights Kenya’s ambition to establish itself as a regional hub for technology, innovation, and skills development.
