NEGOTIATIONS TO RESUME GAS SUPPLY TO THE KINGDOM AND POTENTIAL ACTIVATION OF THE

The Chairman of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, Eng. Ziad Al-Sa’aydeh, revealed on Monday that negotiations are currently underway to resume the flow of Israeli gas to Jordan after an interruption lasting more than a month. Al-Sa’aydeh explained that the National Electric Power Company and Chevron—the company responsible for the field supplying Israeli gas to Jordan—are in discussions to restore the gas flow. However, Chevron continues to cite “force majeure” as the reason for the ongoing delay. This development comes after Israel halted gas supplies to Jordan a month ago, coinciding with the start of military strikes against Iran in coordination with the United States. Jordan relies on this gas for approximately 60% of its electricity generation, which has forced the government to turn to alternative, more expensive sources of power—costing up to 100 million dinars per month. During a meeting organized yesterday by the Edama Association for Energy, Environment and Water, Al-Sa’aydeh noted that electricity tariffs have not changed so far. However, he indicated that the government may reconsider activating the “fuel price differential” clause if cost pressures persist. This clause, which has been set at zero since April, is calculated monthly based on an approved formula and global energy prices, and is typically linked to increases in electricity tariffs when oil prices rise.
