ENERGY MINISTRY: JORDAN’S IMPORTS OF IRAQI OIL ARE NOT FREE

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources confirmed on Monday that Jordan’s imports of Iraqi oil are “not free,” but are governed by detailed commercial agreements that reflect an advanced model of economic cooperation between the two countries, serving mutual interests and strengthening regional integration. The ministry explained that Jordan purchases Kirkuk crude at the monthly Brent benchmark price minus $16 per barrel. This differential includes $3.40 for quality adjustments payable to the Jordan Petroleum Refinery, $0.09 for inspection fees, $7.75 for transportation from Iraq to the refinery, and $4.76 in savings for the Jordanian treasury. It added that Jordan is responsible for providing the tankers used to transport the crude, with the fleet split evenly between Iraqi and Jordanian trucks—supporting job creation for hundreds of workers. The ministry also highlighted broader benefits of bilateral cooperation for Iraq. Goods entering through the Port of Aqaba receive a 75% exemption on handling fees, with Iraqi importers paying only 25%. In addition, Jordan supplies electricity to Iraq’s Rutba region in the first phase of the electricity interconnection project, with a capacity of 40 megawatts at 132 kV. (ICE AMMAN)
