INDIA TARGETS OVER TEN-FOLD EXPANSION IN NUCLEAR POWER CAPACITY TO 100 GW BY 2047, SAYS CEA CHAIRPERSON MR. GHANSHYAM PRASAD

India is aiming to expand its nuclear power capacity from the current 8.8 gigawatt (GW) to 100 GW by 2047, marking more than a ten-fold increase, according to Central Electricity Authority (CEA) Chairperson Mr. Ghanshyam Prasad. Speaking on the sidelines of a session focused on India’s nuclear roadmap, Mr. Prasad noted that achieving this target will require sustained acceleration in capacity addition over the coming decades. The expansion forms part of a broader roadmap to strengthen India’s long-term power generation capabilities and meet rising electricity demand. He emphasised that the scale of increase is significant and will require coordinated efforts across multiple stakeholders to ensure timely execution. To achieve the 100 GW target, the roadmap has identified several key requirements, including legislative changes, streamlined processes and operational frameworks to support large-scale nuclear deployment. The Chairperson highlighted that preparatory work is already underway, with enabling provisions such as the SHANTI Act forming part of the proposed framework. Further steps are being taken to operationalise the roadmap and address implementation challenges. The planned expansion is expected to play a critical role in strengthening India’s power sector by supporting long-term energy planning and ensuring a reliable electricity supply as demand continues to grow.Disclaimer: This information has been collected through secondary research and IBEF is not responsible for any errors in the same.https://www.ibef.org/news/india-targets-over-ten-fold-expansion-in-nuclear-power-capacity-to-100-gw-by-2047-says-cea-chairperson-mr-ghanshyam-prasad (ICE MUMBAI)
