Astana and Paris discuss prospects for cooperation in nuclear sectorKazakhstan’s Atomic Energy Agency and French company Orano discussed current issues and prospects for cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, the agency’s press service said.According to the press service, the issues were reviewed on Wednesday during a meeting between Deputy Chairman of the Atomic Energy Agency Asset Makhambetov and Xavier Saint Martin Tillet, chief executive officer of Orano Mining. Representatives of Kazatomprom also took part in the meeting.The sides noted that joint venture KATCO, established in 1996, is a key project of bilateral cooperation in the uranium mining sector.“During the meeting, the parties reviewed prospects for developing cooperation in the nuclear sector both in the Republic of Kazakhstan and abroad, including in research and development, as well as personnel training,” the statement said.Following the meeting, the sides confirmed their interest in further strengthening the partnership and agreed to continue joint work.KATCO is a Kazakh-French joint venture established in 1996 by Orano (51%) and Kazatomprom (49%). The company is engaged in the development, mining and processing of uranium at the Moiynkum deposit in the Turkestan region (Tortkuduk and Moiynkum sites) using in-situ recovery (ISR) technology.
