FIRST PHASE OF ERBIL GREEN BELT PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION

As part of ongoing efforts to combat climate change and promote a healthy environment, the Erbil Green Belt Project -- one of the capital's most strategic initiatives-is paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future for the city.This large-scale project encircles the city of Erbil, extending 78 kilometres in length and 2 kilometres in width. It is planned to include approximately 7 million productive trees, such as olive, pistachio, and orange trees. In addition to enhancing the city's visual appeal, the project will also serve as a valuable economic resource.A few months ago, Masrour Barzani, Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the project, which is now nearing completion.Key Statistics of Phase One:Area covered: 4,200 acresProject cost: USD 6.2 millionPlanting: Approximately 700,000 saplingsEmployment: Daily work for 230 labourers and 30 engineersImmediately following the completion of this phase, the second phase is scheduled to begin, covering an area of 11,000 acres. The entire project will be implemented in eight distinct phases to achieve its final objective.The project addresses several key environmental and public health priorities, including:Reducing urban temperaturesImproving air quality and protecting public healthPreserving the environment while supporting the local economyFrom a scientific perspective, the green belt is expected to have a significant environmental impact. It has the capacity to sequester between 140,000 and 210,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) annually.This initiative positions Erbil among the cities taking practical and meaningful action to protect the environment and contribute to global climate efforts.
