INDONESIA PUSHES FOR COFFEE ROASTER COMPETENCY IMPROVEMENT AMID CONSUMPTION
The Indonesian government is boosting the national coffee industry by organizing a Competency Certification Program for coffee roasters, held at Amuya Coffee Academy in Jakarta on April 15–16, 2026. Seventeen participants from SMEs joined the training, which focused on technical roasting skills to improve competitiveness and product quality. With 1,501 coffee processing SMEs and 78 large-scale companies nationwide, the initiative aims to strengthen Indonesia’s position as the world’s fourth-largest coffee producer. Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita emphasized that rising consumption trends and growing appreciation for coffee quality make roasting a strategic stage in production. Data shows Indonesia’s coffee consumption has grown by 50 percent over the past decade, while the number of cafes is expanding by 16 percent annually. Certification provides official recognition of roasters’ skills, enhancing credibility with consumers and partners. Director of Directorate General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA), Reni Yanita, and Director of Food, Furniture, and Building Materials SMEs, Afrizal Haris, noted that the program supports SMEs in becoming more professional, sustainable, and globally competitive. With exports reaching 117,500 tons in 2024 to markets such as Malaysia, China, and Saudi Arabia, the government sees certification as a key step to expand market access and maintain Indonesia’s global standing in the coffee sector.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2363379/govt-pushes-for-coffee-roaster-competency-improvement-amid-consumption-growth#google_vignette (ICE GIACARTA)
