INDONESIA EYES CNG TO REDUCE RELIANCE ON LPG IMPORTS

Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, stated that the government is currently discussing the development of compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative to reduce dependence on imported liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The proposal is still in a cross‑sector discussion and technical study phase before being finalized as a national energy policy. CNG is considered a strategic option to strengthen energy independence because it is derived from domestically abundant natural gas (mainly methane and ethane), unlike LPG, which relies on propane and butane and is largely imported. The government is therefore consolidating input from multiple agencies to ensure the effectiveness and long‑term benefits of this transition for national energy security. At the same time, state gas company PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) is actively promoting CNG to improve fiscal efficiency and reduce imports. Through its subsidiary PT Gagas Energi Indonesia, PGN is expanding CNG distribution nationwide for industrial, commercial, retail, and transportation uses, including government initiatives such as the Free Nutritional Meal (MBG) program. CNG is increasingly viewed as a more efficient, practical, and environmentally friendly energy source, with strong potential to broaden access to clean energy while supporting Indonesia’s broader goals of energy self‑reliance.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/413777/indonesia-eyes-cng-to-reduce-reliance-on-lpg-imports (ICE GIACARTA)
