INDONESIA’S HAND TOOL INDUSTRY INCREASES DOMESTIC MARKET SUPPLY

Indonesia’s domestic hand tool industry for the agriculture and plantation sectors is showing increasing reliability, with local producers now able to meet domestic demand through a diverse range of quality products. The sector supports the government’s broader push to strengthen downstream processing in the national steel industry. According to Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, the industry has strong potential despite relying on relatively simple manufacturing processes, thanks to a large, skilled workforce and sustained demand in Indonesia’s agrarian economy. Many SMEs and large companies continue to depend on these basic tools, particularly for harvesting, while government programs such as P3DN are helping improve market absorption of SME-made products that meet Indonesian National Standards (SNI). As of late 2025, Indonesia had 123 hand tool SMEs employing over 500 workers, spread across key production centers from Sumatra to Sulawesi, with the highest concentration in North Sumatra. The Ministry of Industry is working with local governments, academics, and industry players to develop SME clusters and boost competitiveness. However, challenges remain, including limited access to suitable steel raw materials, competition from imports, and technology constraints. To address these issues, the ministry has introduced partnership facilitation, technical assistance, and machinery modernization programs. Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2366697/indonesias-hand-tool-industry-increases-domestic-market-supply (ICE GIACARTA)
