INDONESIA BOOSTS SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONES AS STRATEGIC POLICY

Indonesia is elevating Special Economic Zones (SEZ) as a central pillar of its economic transformation strategy. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stressed that SEZs are designed to accelerate industrialization, boost added value, and strengthen regional economies. He called for ministries and institutions to actively support investment potential through infrastructure development and simplified licensing, in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive. The government sees SEZs as vital to responding sustainably to global economic dynamics while reducing regional disparities. The impact is already visible: in Q1 2026, investment realization reached IDR 498.79 trillion (approx. US$ 31.5 billion), marking a 7.22% year-on-year increase. Workforce absorption also rose by 18.93% to 706,569 people. The downstream sector contributed about 30% of total investment, underscoring its importance. Looking ahead, the government is eyeing digital infrastructure opportunities, particularly data centers, with Batam and Bitung identified as potential hubs. Airlangga emphasized that SEZs must be fine-tuned and fully operational within the next three to four years to maximize their role in driving Indonesia’s long-term growth.Source: https://rri.co.id/en/business/2368597/indonesia-boosts-special-economic-zones-as-strategic-policy#google_vignette (ICE GIACARTA)
