INDONESIA CUTS IMPORT DUTIES ON PLASTIC RAW MATERIALS TO ZERO

The Indonesian government has introduced a zero-percent import duty on key plastic raw materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, HDPE, and LLDPE, aiming to stabilize supply and reduce production costs for domestic industries. The policy, announced by Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto, will run for six months before reassessment. Import duties on LPG were also cut to zero to support its use as an alternative feedstock amid limited naphtha availability. These measures are expected to help maintain price stability in packaging and food sectors, while containing inflationary pressures. Beyond tariff cuts, the government is revising import licensing procedures to improve efficiency and transparency, strengthening systems like the National Industrial Information System (SINAS) and the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). The move comes as Indonesia faces global petrochemical supply disruptions, particularly naphtha shortages linked to tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have driven up prices by 50–100 percent. With domestic reliance on imports at 55–60 percent, the government is pursuing diversification of supply sources and boosting local production capacity to enhance resilience in the plastics and manufacturing sectors.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6562/markets-and-finance/indonesia-cuts-import-duties-on-plastic-raw-materials-to-zero-to-stabilize-industry-costs (ICE GIACARTA)
