NO MALACCA TAX ISSUE IN ASEAN-EU TALKS AS INDONESIA STICKS TO MARITIME LAW

During talks in Bandar Seri Begawan between the EU and ASEAN on Tuesday (28/4), the Indonesian government clarified that they are committed to international maritime law and its stance against charging foreign ships passing through the Malacca Strait. This clarification was made after Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa joked about imposing transit fees in the Strait, raising concerns, albeit with the denial by the government on such plans. Vice Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir reaffirmed Indonesia’s adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) that forbade tolls on transiting vessels. Both ASEAN and EU diplomats are also concerned about unilateral measures that might obstruct maritime traffic, especially in areas like the Strait of Hormuz.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/news/no-malacca-tax-issue-in-aseaneu-talks-as-indonesia-sticks-to-maritime-law (ICE GIACARTA)
