CENTRAL BANK ALLOWS GLOBAL PAYMENT NETWORKS IN SYRIA

The Central Bank of Syria announced on Monday that licensed banks and electronic payment companies can now work with global payment networks such as Visa and Mastercard, aiming to modernize financial infrastructure and enhance digital inclusion.  Central Bank Governor Abdulkader Husrieh described the move as a strategic step toward a more advanced digital economy, facilitating money transfers and payments for Syrians inside and abroad, and marking a new phase in developing payment systems while integrating Syria into the global financial system after years of reliance on limited traditional tools.  The decision allows banks and local payment companies to expand services with more advanced and secure solutions for individuals and businesses. It enables people coming from abroad to use international bank cards inside Syria and supports wider use of Syrian-issued cards abroad, promotes electronic payments, reduces reliance on cash, improves user experience, and boosts e-commerce and startups.  Husrieh added that cooperation with global payment companies will transfer expertise and modern technologies to the local market, enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of the financial sector.
