INDONESIA SEES COAL OPPORTUNITY AS EUROPE REOPENS DEMAND

European countries have expressed interest in importing up to 20 million tons of Indonesian coal per year, signaling a significant shift in energy priorities among advanced economies. According to Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Bahlil Lahadalia, geopolitical tensions and energy security concerns are driving Europe and the United States to reconsider coal, despite long-standing commitments to renewable energy and decarbonization. Although Bahlil did not name the requesting countries or specify a timeline, he framed the interest as evidence of policy reversals that expose contradictions in global climate commitments. He questioned how developed nations can push developing countries to retire coal while reopening coal options themselves, especially in light of net-zero targets set for 2050–2060. For Indonesia, the renewed demand presents both economic opportunity and strategic complexity. Bahlil emphasized that Jakarta’s response will be governed by pragmatism rather than diplomatic or normative pressure. Maintaining affordable electricity prices, ensuring energy security, and protecting households and industry remain the government’s top priorities. As a result, coal-fired power plants will continue operating in the near term to avoid price shocks and economic strain. Bahlil also highlighted Indonesia’s resilience in a global energy crisis, citing strong coal reserves and production capacity as a strategic advantage. Overall, Indonesia is signaling that its energy policy will remain anchored in national interests, even as global energy narratives shift. While acknowledging the longer-term transition toward cleaner energy, the government is unwilling to compromise domestic stability to meet external expectations, especially when major economies themselves are adjusting their energy strategies under pressure.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6584/energy-and-resources/indonesia-sees-coal-opportunity-as-europe-reopens-demand (ICE GIACARTA)
