INDONESIA PUSHES MULTI-MARKET TRADE AGREEMENTS WITH EUROPE, CANADA, UK AND ASEAN

Indonesia is accelerating a diversified trade strategy to hedge against rising global protectionism, with the European Union at the center of its priorities. Jakarta is pushing to finalize a long‑negotiated trade agreement with the EU that would grant zero import tariffs for Indonesian exports starting January 1, 2027. The deal has entered its final procedural phase, including translation into all EU official languages ahead of member‑state ratification. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the agreement could significantly boost exports—especially for small and medium-sized enterprises—while strengthening Indonesia’s position in global supply chains amid economic uncertainty. While the EU remains the main focus, Indonesia is also advancing parallel initiatives to diversify markets and reduce reliance on any single bloc. These include ratifying the Indonesia–Canada CEPA, deepening economic cooperation with the UK under the Economic Growth Partnership framework, and reinforcing ASEAN as a strategic pillar. Jakarta is also backing ASEAN’s long‑term ambition for a bloc‑to‑bloc trade agreement with the EU, citing strong existing trade and investment ties. Together, these bilateral and regional efforts reflect Indonesia’s broader strategy to counter protectionism and position itself as a more resilient, globally integrated trading economy.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6598/markets-and-finance/indonesia-pushes-multi-market-trade-agreements-with-europe-canada-uk-and-asean-in-focus (ICE GIACARTA)
