SYRIA REHABILITATES RAQQA OIL FIELD TO RESTORE PRODUCTION CAPACITY

Syrian Energy Ministry teams are carrying out rehabilitation works at the Al-Thawra oil field in Raqqa province as part of efforts to restore production capacity following years of damage to infrastructure and facilities.  Officials at the field said technical teams were repairing wells, pumping stations, storage tanks and processing facilities that sustained extensive damage during previous years of war and disruption.  The work includes rebuilding infrastructure, reactivating damaged wells and restoring oil transport and storage systems in an effort to gradually resume normal operations.  Production officials said current output at the field stands at around 2,500 barrels per day, significantly below previous levels that once reached about 25,000 barrels per day.  They attributed the decline to infrastructure damage, equipment shortages and operational challenges affecting the field.  Officials said teams were also working to transfer crude oil from irregular collection pits into regulated storage and transport systems to reduce losses and improve operational efficiency.  The rehabilitation effort faces several challenges, including shortages of drilling equipment, pumps, electric motors and spare parts, in addition to damage affecting power networks and pumping stations.  Officials added that restoring the field’s electrical substation, which was damaged and looted in previous years, remained a key requirement for returning the field to full operational capacity.  In January, the head of the Syrian Petroleum Company said Syria planned to develop oil fields in the Jazira region using national expertise in cooperation with partners as part of broader reconstruction efforts.  He said Syria’s oil production had previously ranged between 400,000 and 500,000 barrels per day before falling to below 100,000 barrels because of infrastructure damage and irregular depletion of wells.
