Kazakhstan boosts Kashagan and Tengiz oil supplies to domestic refineriesThe share of oil from the Kashagan and Tengiz fields shipped to Kazakh oil refineries rose sharply in 2025, the Energy Ministry said in a report on the development of the country's oil refining industry."The share of oil from the Kashagan and Tengiz fields in refinery feedstock increased from 0.05 million tonnes to 1.36 million tonnes, or from 0.3% to 8%," according to the document posted on the ministry's website.Kazakh oil producers find it economically unprofitable to supply crude to the domestic market compared with exporting it, the report said. As a result, the ministry said it aims to "gradually equalize fuel prices" and, in turn, raise purchase prices and balance the profitability of oil supplies to domestic and foreign markets.There are three refineries in Kazakhstan. They are located in Shymkent (south Kazakhstan), Atyrau (west) and Pavlodar (east).Kashagan is Kazakhstan’s first offshore oil and gas field in the Caspian Sea. It is the largest international investment project in the country. The estimated recoverable reserves of Kashagan range between 9 and 13 billion barrels of oil. Commercial operation at Kashagan began on November 1, 2016.North Caspian Operating Company (NCOC), the operator of the Kashagan project, is owned by KMG Kashagan B.V. (16.877%), Shell Kazakhstan Development B.V. (16.807%), Total EP Kazakhstan (16.807%), Agip Caspian Sea B.V. (16.807%), ExxonMobil Kazakhstan Inc. (16.807%), CNPC Kazakhstan B.V. (8.333%), and Inpex North Caspian Sea Ltd. (7.563%).The Tengiz field was discovered in 1979 and now is one of the world’s deepest producing super giant fields. Estimated oil in place in the Tengiz field is 3.1 billion metric tonnes. The field is developed by Tengizchevroil JV (TCO), which is owned by Chevron Corp. (50%), ExxonMobil Kazakhstan Ventures Inc. (25%), Kazakhstan through National Company KazMunayGas (20%) and Lukoil (5%). The company has been operating in Kazakhstan since 1993. (ICE ALMATY)
