KAZAKHSTAN-JET/FUEL-VAT

Kazakhstan may restore VAT on jet fuel for airlinesKazakhstan's Ministry of National Economy may repeal tax benefits that exempt airlines from paying value-added tax (VAT) on jet fuel, Deputy Minister Azamat Amrin said Thursday."When we repealed the VAT rule on jet fuel, one of the stated goals was to lower ticket prices — or at least that was the justification from the responsible industry body. We will now review this matter, and it will be one of the grounds for repealing the benefit and generating additional revenue when drafting the budget," Amrin said in the Majilis, the lower house of parliament, responding to a question from lawmaker Bakytzhan Bazarbek.Bazarbek said ticket prices not only failed to decline after the benefits were introduced but actually rose."You exempted the purchase of jet fuel from VAT. Your justification was that ticket prices would drop sharply. Since January 1, prices have not only failed to drop — they have increased. The money airlines used to spend on jet fuel, they kept for themselves. That accounts for about 60% to 70% of a ticket," Bazarbek said. (ICE ALMATY)
