Kazakhstan approves 32.5 billion tenge biopharmaceutical plant in Alatau SEZThe Kazakh government has approved a 32.5 billion tenge investment agreement to build a full-cycle biopharmaceutical complex in the Alatau special economic zone in Almaty region, the prime minister's press service said Monday.Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov signed the resolution approving the agreement, which was concluded between the Ministry of Health and Steppe Pharmaceuticals LLP. The project is entirely privately funded."The plant plans to produce 20 types of medicines, including treatments for oncological and rare diseases, as well as modern immunobiological agents," the government said.The facility is scheduled to open in 2031, reach full capacity in 2032, and transition to full-cycle production for key product lines by 2034.In addition to drug manufacturing and certification, the project includes research and development, bioavailability studies, preparation of registration dossiers, and implementation of international Good Manufacturing Practice standards. The complex will also host a training and professional development system for Kazakh specialists."The project will strengthen the country's drug security and create modern pharmaceutical production infrastructure in Almaty region, generating about 60 new jobs," the press service said.According to government data, eight major investment projects are currently underway in Kazakhstan's pharmaceutical industry. Domestic pharmaceutical production reached 191.1 billion tenge last year, an 8.7% increase from 2024. Total investment attracted to the sector has exceeded 390 billion tenge. (ICE ALMATY)
