The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced a US$ 22 million financing package for Spinneys supermarkets to support sustainable development projects, retail expansion and energy-efficiency initiatives amid ongoing economic and regional challenges.  The package includes a US$ 20.5 million loan and a US$ 1.5 million European Union-backed grant, with part of the funding allocated to improving energy efficiency across existing and new stores. The project is also expected to reduce carbon emissions and cut plastic bag use by 25% through the introduction of fully recyclable bags. The financing will additionally support the expansion of Spinneys’ retail network and production capacity, including a fresh snack production line, alongside training programs focused on retail, digital and AI-related skills.
