INDONESIA ACCELERATES WASTE-TO-ENERGY PROJECTS IN 30 LOCATIONS
The Indonesian government is fast-tracking the development of waste-to-energy (PSEL) facilities, with three sites set to begin groundbreaking soon and 12 more moving into partner selection. Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan emphasized that these projects, mandated under Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2025, aim to start operations by 2028. In total, around 30 PSEL facilities are planned, focusing on urban areas generating over 1,000 tons of waste daily. The initiative is part of a broader national transformation to reduce landfill burdens, produce renewable electricity, and cut carbon emissions. Hasan highlighted during World Environment Day in Pontianak that waste management is central to addressing the triple planetary crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Indonesia produces about 60 million tons of waste annually, much of it poorly managed, making this one of the country’s most urgent environmental challenges. Alongside PSEL, the government is promoting technologies like Refuse-Derived Fuel, composting, Integrated Waste Processing Sites, and pyrolysis, tailored to regional needs. Collaboration with local governments, businesses, academics, and the public is being encouraged to strengthen environmental protection and safeguard food security.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/418215/indonesia-accelerates-waste-to-energy-projects-in-30-locations?utm_source=antaranews&utm_medium=desktop&utm_campaign=popular_right (ICE GIACARTA)
