INDONESIA IN TALKS TO INVEST IN LATIN AMERICAN OIL FIELDS OUTSIDE VENEZUELA
Indonesia is exploring new crude oil opportunities in Latin America beyond its existing operations in Venezuela, with plans to expand through state-owned energy company Pertamina. Its subsidiary, Pertamina Internasional Eksplorasi dan Produksi (PIEP), already holds a majority stake in Maurel & Prom, which operates oil assets in Venezuela. Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno indicated that Indonesia is in early-stage discussions with other countries in the region, which is rich in oil and gas reserves, although no specific nations have been named. The move comes as Indonesia seeks to diversify energy sources and strengthen supply security. This strategy is driven in part by ongoing global energy disruptions, particularly the prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil transit route, which has caused supply shocks and rising crude prices. Pertamina has recently resumed operations in Venezuela after US approval, with production at one key field increasing significantly. Meanwhile, Indonesia is already feeling the impact of global volatility, including a sharp increase in domestic fuel prices. Expanding into Latin America is therefore seen as a strategic step to mitigate risks, stabilize supply, and enhance the country’s long-term energy resilience.Source: https://jakartaglobe.id/business/indonesia-in-talks-to-invest-in-latin-american-oil-fields-outside-venezuela (ICE GIACARTA)
