AGRICULTURE, IT SERVICES, AND REMITTANCES SUPPORT UKRAINE’S EXTERNAL STABILITY

The share of agri-food products in Ukraine’s exports rose to 64% during the first five months of 2026, according to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU). The figure highlights the agricultural sector’s growing importance amid the challenges posed by the ongoing war. For comparison, food products accounted for 43.5% of Ukrainian exports in 2021 and 59% in 2025, reflecting a significant shift in the country’s export structure over the past several years. However, the NBU argues that it would be inaccurate to conclude that Ukraine’s balance of payments has become critically dependent on agricultural exports. The central bank notes that the structure of foreign-currency inflows has changed substantially since the start of the full-scale invasion. In particular, international financial assistance has become a key source of foreign exchange, helping Ukraine maintain strong international reserves and offset the loss of export capacity brought about by the war.The NBU also highlights exports of IT services and remittances from Ukrainians working abroad as important and stable sources of foreign-currency earnings. Nevertheless, the agricultural sector remains a major contributor to the country’s economy. In 2025, agri-food exports generated $22.5B in foreign-exchange revenue for Ukraine.https://ubn.news/food-products-account-for-64-of-ukraines-exports-but-the-economy-benefits-from-a-diverse-collection-of-foreign-currency-inflows/ (ICE KIEV)
