INDONESIA TARGETS TO RESOLVE 80 PERCENT WASTE PROBLEM BY 2029

Indonesia has set an ambitious target to resolve 70–80% of its waste problem by 2029 through expanded waste-processing facilities, improved management systems, and household-level waste sorting. Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan emphasized that government efforts must be matched by public participation, noting that source-based waste management is key to building a cleaner and healthier nation. He praised Jakarta’s pioneering role in involving community groups in waste separation and highlighted reforms that integrate waste-to-energy (WtE) facilities into the national strategy. Under Presidential Regulation No. 109 of 2025, about 30 WtE plants are planned for urban areas generating over 1,000 tons of waste daily. Groundbreaking for three plants is expected soon, while 12 more projects are being prepared by Danantara Indonesia for partner selection, with operations targeted to begin in 2028. Hasan stressed that household sorting complements these facilities, as organic waste can be turned into fertilizer and recyclable materials hold economic value. Together, infrastructure expansion and community participation form the backbone of Indonesia’s waste-management reform.Source: https://en.antaranews.com/news/419895/indonesia-targets-to-resolve-80-percent-waste-problem-by-2029 (ICE GIACARTA)
