INDIAN RAILWAYS APPROVES US$ 2.86 MILLION KAVACH DEPLOYMENT ON 631 ROUTE KILOMETERS OF EAST COAST RAILWAY
Indian Railways has approved the deployment of Kavach, India's indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, across 631 route kilometres (RKm) of the East Coast Railway at an estimated cost of Rs. 27 crore (US$ 2.86 million). The project will cover six key railway sections: Baghuapal-Budhapank, Haridaspur-Paradeep, Khurda Road-Balangir, Naupada-Gunupur, Lanjigarh Road-Junagarh and Bobbili-Salur. The initiative forms part of Indian Railways' broader programme to expand Kavach deployment with an LTE-based communication backbone across the national rail network. Kavach is designed to enhance operational safety by preventing signal passing at danger (SPAD), over-speeding and train collisions through continuous monitoring of train movements and automatic brake application when required. The deployment is expected to significantly improve railway safety, operational efficiency and service reliability across important passenger and freight corridors in Odisha and neighbouring regions. In addition to providing automatic train protection and collision avoidance capabilities, Kavach enables safer train operations during adverse weather conditions such as dense fog, thereby improving punctuality and reducing operational risks. The project aligns with Indian Railways' ongoing efforts to modernise rail infrastructure through indigenous technologies and expand safety systems across high-density and strategically important routes. The wider rollout of Kavach is expected to strengthen the resilience of India's railway network while supporting faster, safer and more efficient rail transportation.Disclaimer: This information has been collected through secondary research and IBEF is not responsible for any errors in the same.https://www.ibef.org/news/indian-railways-approves-us-2-86-million-kavach-deployment-on-631-route-kilometres-of-east-coast-railway (ICE MUMBAI)
