Kazakh president signs soil protection lawPresident of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed a law on soil protection and accompanying amendments on land relations and the agro-industrial complex.The legislation establishes a legal framework for protecting Kazakhstan's soil resources. It defines the concept of soil and its key indicators, sets out basic requirements for the rational use and protection of soils, clarifies the functions of local government bodies, identifies priority areas for scientific research and promotes international cooperation.Under the new law, a soil passport will be mandatory when agricultural land is allocated. The document must specify the soil quality score, humus content, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium levels, salinity, acidity and other characteristics.The law introduces mandatory measures to restore soil properties, including crop rotation, snow retention and mulching on agricultural land, as well as the application of organic and mineral fertilizers based on science-backed systems.Restrictions on growing certain crops will also be imposed depending on soil condition.Requirements are also laid down for protecting soils from flooding, waterlogging, secondary salinization, depletion, desiccation and compaction, along with measures to rehabilitate degraded land.
