Indonesia is accelerating the construction of the Greater Denpasar waste-to-energy plant in Bali to improve waste management, protect the environment, and strengthen the island’s tourism competitiveness. Construction started on July 8 and is expected to take 18 months, with operations planned for late 2027. The facility will process up to 1,400 tons of waste per day and is part of President Prabowo Subianto’s initiative to speed up waste-to-energy development through simplified regulations, faster permits, and stronger coordination among government agencies. The project is expected to serve as a national model for modern waste management and is supported by state investment fund Danantara Indonesia. Bali, which receives more than 16 million visitors annually and generates around 3,500 tons of waste each day, relies heavily on tourism, which contributes over 65% of its economy.
