Cathay Pacific to launch Astana cargo flights, Almaty passenger service plannedHong Kong's Cathay Pacific plans to launch regular cargo flights to Kazakhstan starting Aug. 1, the Kazakh Transport Ministry said Friday.Cathay's regional manager for the Middle East, Oliver Coelho, told Civil Aviation Committee Chairwoman Saltanat Tompiyeva that the airline intends to operate up to five weekly cargo flights to Astana using Boeing 747 aircraft.Coelho also said Cathay aims to begin scheduled passenger service between Hong Kong and Almaty from January 2027, operating three flights a week on Airbus A330 jets. The route would be the only direct air link between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan.Cathay is Hong Kong's flag carrier and one of Asia's largest international airlines. Together with its subsidiaries, it operates around 237 aircraft and serves more than 100 passenger destinations.Cathay Cargo runs scheduled freight services to 41 destinations and carries over 1.67 million metric tons of cargo annually, ranking it among the world's leading air cargo operators.
