INDONESIA UPGRADES NAVAL BASES FOR ARRIVAL OF ITS GIUSEPPE GARIBALDI

Indonesia’s Navy is advancing a major modernization effort with preparations for the arrival of the former Italian aircraft carrier, ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi. Expected to join the fleet before the Armed Forces’ 81st anniversary on October 5, 2026, the vessel will greatly enhance Indonesia’s ability to operate aviation-capable warships. To accommodate the 14,150-ton ship, Lampung Naval Base is being upgraded with expanded docking facilities, specialized mooring systems, and a high-voltage shore power supply. Kelagian Island has also been designated as a forward security outpost to strengthen operations in the Sunda Strait. Meanwhile, 100 Indonesian personnel are undergoing intensive training in Italy, supported by Italian Navy crews during the delivery voyage and initial operations until full control is handed over to TNI AL. Beyond infrastructure, Indonesia is investing heavily in retrofitting and support systems. The government has allocated US$450 million (Rp7.3 trillion) for the carrier’s modernization, alongside US$550 million (Rp8.9 trillion) for its helicopter fleet. Navy leaders stress that this initiative is not just about acquiring a ship but about building a sustainable support network, expanding bases across the archipelago, and ensuring deployment flexibility. Together, these measures aim to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime defense capabilities and establish a long-term foundation for operating large aviation-capable vessels.Source: https://indonesiabusinesspost.com/6905/defense-and-security/indonesia-upgrades-naval-bases-for-arrival-of-its-giuseppe-garibaldi (ICE GIACARTA)
