KAZAKHSTAN-UK-RHENIUM-INVESTMENT
British Maritime House to invest $107 mln in rhenium production in KazakhstanThe United Kingdom-based Maritime House will invest $107 million in rhenium production in Kazakhstan under an agreement signed with Kazakh enterprise ZhezkazganRedMet, the British Embassy in Kazakhstan said. This is a five-year agreement that aims to expand cooperation in rhenium processing and support a $30 million investment project in the town of Saran to produce metallic rhenium from secondary raw materials.Rhenium is one of the rarest and most expensive metals, used in aircraft engines, aerospace, gas turbines and oil refining. It has the second-highest melting point of any metal at 3,186°C, after tungsten. In February, Kazakhstan and the UK signed a series of bilateral documents following a roundtable in London, including a roadmap for strategic partnership on critical minerals through 2027.ZhezkazganRedMet, a state-owned enterprise, is Kazakhstan's first and only producer of ammonium perrhenate, rhenic acid and metallic rhenium in powder, rod and pellet form, as well as osmium isotopes. Its primary source of rhenium and osmium is copper sulfide ore from the Zhezkazgan field, operated by Kazakhmys Group. (ICE ALMATY)
