Kazakhstan, U.S. company KBR sign agreements for sustainable aviation fuel plantKazMunayGas-Aero, a subsidiary of National Company KazMunayGas (KMG), KazFoodProducts and U.S. engineering firm Kellogg Brown & Root LLC (KBR) have signed agreements to advance the construction of Kazakhstan's first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant, KMG said in a statement Thursday."Two trilateral agreements were signed covering the development of a process design package and a licensing agreement for the PURESAF℠ technology, including the Alcohol-to-Jet process," the statement said.The project is part of Kazakhstan's push to become an international aviation hub with strong transit potential, while also integrating domestic agricultural feedstocks into low-carbon fuel production, KMG said.The initiative is aimed at deep decarbonization of the aviation sector and meeting Kazakhstan's greenhouse gas reduction commitments.A memorandum of cooperation on SAF production was signed between U.S.-based LanzaJet and KMG in August 2024. BioOperations, part of KazFoodProducts and a producer of wheat-based bioethanol, later joined the project.Kellogg Brown & Root LLC (KBR) is a U.S. engineering and technology firm headquartered in Houston, providing energy and sustainable technology solutions in more than 80 countries.KazMunayGas-Aero LLP, established in 2014 as a subsidiary of KMG, is a sole operator for the supply of TS-1/RT jet fuel to the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan; the company is also a sole supplier of gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil and aviation fuel in Kazakhstan.KazFoodProducts LLP is a major Kazakh agribusiness holding, whose BioOperations plant specializes in deep grain processing and bioethanol production.BioOperations, located in the town of Taiynsha of the North Kazakhstan region, is a flagship grain processing plant producing plant-based bioethanol used as a fuel additive.
