INDIA CLEARS ONLY ONE CHINESE FDI PROPOSAL WORTH RS 1 CRORE in FY26; approves 13 Hong Kong investments

India approved one Chinese FDI proposal worth US$0.11 million in FY26 and 13 proposals from Hong Kong worth US$70.16 million, according to DPIIT data. Overall, the government cleared 63 FDI proposals worth US$1.18 billion (US$1,183.07 million) between April 2025 and March 2026. Singapore led approved FDI by value with five proposals worth US$374.70 million, followed by the UK with five proposals worth US$284.79 million, while two proposals from Thailand worth US$183.91 million were also cleared. In March, the government eased certain Press Note 3 provisions by allowing investments with up to 10% non-controlling beneficial ownership from land-border countries to qualify under the automatic route, subject to sectoral conditions. However, the relaxation does not apply to entities incorporated in China, Hong Kong or other countries sharing a land border with India. Since April 2000, China has accounted for 0.32% of India's cumulative FDI equity inflows, with investments of US$2.51 billion, while Hong Kong has contributed 0.62%, or US$4.91 billion. The FY26 figures are broadly in line with FY25, when India approved one Chinese proposal worth US$3.30 million, cleared 82 FDI proposals worth US$4.57 billion (US$4,569.89 million), and approved 11 Hong Kong proposals worth US$140.84 million.
