COMMERCE MINISTER: FTA NEGOTIATIONS ONGOING WITH 12 COUNTRIES

Experts highlight that while the global halal market is valued at around $3 trillion, Bangladesh's share is less than $1 billion. Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir announced ongoing discussions for Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with 12 countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia, with formal talks with the EU expected soon. He emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing export capacity and attracting foreign investment by improving the business climate. At a recent event, speakers pointed out Bangladesh's underperformance in the halal market due to inadequate policies, technology, and skilled manpower. They noted that complexities in the halal certification process, involving multiple institutions, hinder progress. To address this, they suggested establishing an independent halal certification agency to streamline processes and boost the export potential of Bangladeshi halal products. (ICE NEW DELHI)
