KAZAKHSTAN-KAZAKHMYS-PLANT-ECOLOGY

Kazakhmys, CNCEC sign $214 million deal to build sulfuric acid plant at Zhezkazgan smelterKazakhstan's Kazakhmys Group and China National Chemical Engineering Company have signed an EPC contract worth $213.76 million to build a new sulfuric acid plant at the Zhezkazgan copper smelter, the company said. The new facility will have an annual capacity of 350,000 tonnes of sulfuric acid and will be able to process up to 300,000 normal cubic meters of process gas per hour, Kazakhmys said.Preparatory work at the site is expected to begin by the end of 2026, with preliminary commissioning scheduled for 2028.The project is part of a major modernization of the smelter aimed at meeting modern environmental standards, the company said. The current gas utilization infrastructure dates back to the 1970s and requires technological upgrades. The project includes not only the new acid plant but also an overhaul of the gas capture and cleaning system. Once completed, gas capture efficiency will reach 99%, significantly reducing sulfur dioxide emissions and the plant's environmental footprint on Zhezkazgan, the company said.Kazakhmys is Kazakhstan's largest copper producer, operating 10 mines, five concentrators, two smelters and two coal mines. The Zhezkazgan smelter is part of the company's metallurgical division, Kazakhmys Smelting LLP.CNCEC is a Chinese engineering and construction firm specializing in chemical engineering, petrochemicals and industrial infrastructure. It is one of the world's largest engineering contractors and is owned by state-owned China National Chemical Engineering Group Corp. (ICE ALMATY)
